Crate Engines vs Turnkey 101: Everything You Need to Know

Date Posted:22 October 2025

Upgrading a performance vehicle or restoring a classic often starts with the engine. Aftermarket engines can be purchased as either crate engines, or turnkey engines – but what’s the difference, and how will it impact your custom build?

What is a crate engine?

Crate engines are factory-assembled engines that are shipped in crates. These are the most basic version of what you could get, without any additional dressing or customisation.

Crate engines are commonly chosen for restoration projects, DIY custom builds or performance upgrades. They’re usually more affordable than a turn-key performance option, particularly if you can do the skilled labour of installation and customisation yourself.

For this reason, crate engines are usually favoured by experienced mechanics or those who prefer hands-on projects.

What does a crate engine come with?

Different suppliers may offer different packages, but a crate engine will typically just be the engine block and other components necessary for installation (like cylinder heads, valve covers).

You’ll need to sort the accessories, wiring and tuning yourself, or work with a trusted mechanic. Some build enthusiasts will prefer this to a turnkey solution, as it gives them full control and visibility at every step.

What is a turnkey engine?

Turnkey engines come fully assembled, tested, and ready to drop in.

When you buy a turnkey engine, it’s right there in the name – it’s essentially plug-and-play. All the performance parts, custom features and anything else you briefed into the build has been supplied and assembled where possible, ready to go into your vehicle.

This is much more convenient, takes less time on your end, and means you’re working with experts rather than figuring it out yourself. Turnkey engines are great for those who are time poor, don’t want to build it themselves, or those who prefer the peace of mind that comes with having professionals handle the process.

While we supply both crate and turnkey engines, our turnkey packages are where our decades of expertise truly deliver unmatched results.

What does a turnkey engine include?

Because turnkey engines are so customisable, what’s included in the package depends on what accessories and components you want. As a start, all Superformance turnkey engines include:

  • Alternator

  • Flexplate or flywheel

  • Plug leads

  • Spark plugs

  • Starter motor

  • Thermostat & housing

  • Belt/s

Then, to really ensure it’s ready to rock, we test all our high-performance engines on an engine stand (or engine dyno by request). That way you know we’ve done our job in building the beating heart of your ride – and you can drive away satisfied with the outcome.

Which is better, a crate engine or a turnkey engine?

Each has their own pros and cons, and there’s no “wrong” option. Your budget, timeframe, personal availability for a project, and prior experience all play a role in deciding which is best for you.

Still not sure which camp you fall into? Try answering these four key questions:

1. Do you want full control over parts and customisation?

  • Yes – If you like having maximum control and hands-on involvement, you might enjoy the creative challenge of a crate engine.

  • No – If you want less hassle and a faster, premium result then turnkey engines are always going to be the answer. In any case, you can customise whatever you want if you work with a reputable performance engine specialist.

2. Are you experienced with engine assembly, wiring, and tuning (or working with a trusted mechanic who is)?

  • Yes – A crate engine will require you to work with a mechanic you can trust, and/or to have excellent mechanical knowledge yourself.

  • No – A turnkey engine may be the better choice for you. It takes the hassle out of the build, which is great if you have less experience or don’t have a good mechanic to work with.

3. Is time a critical factor in your project?

  • Yes – Turnkey engines are typically ready within a set lead time (Superformance basic builds take around 4-6 weeks). More complex or custom jobs can take longer depending on the parts required, but you’ll be given a timeframe, so you know what to expect.

  • No – Crate engines are a good option if you are comfortable waiting for parts and workshop availability, or if this is a passion project with no hard deadline. If you’re more about the experience of the build, then crate engines are perfect.

4. Do you want predictable, upfront costs?

  • Yes – A turnkey offers cost certainty with assembly, accessories, and testing included. You’re more likely to know the full cost up front.

  • No – If you prefer to chip away as you can, a crate engine offers more flexibility because you can stop and start. However, handling the build yourself comes with the risk of unexpected extra costs from labour and tuning.

There’s no one-size-fits-all – but for drivers who want guaranteed performance, clarity on cost, and minimal downtime, turnkey delivers unbeatable value.

However, it’s not just about the destination for many riders. If you want to take the more hands-on approach, we also source and ship quality crate engines to anywhere in Australia.
